Chiapas Fundraiser
The Judge Interact Club is holding our annual fundraiser on Saturday, April 26 at 6 p.m. in the dance studio. The beneficiary this year is the part of the Mexican state of Chiapas which was devastated by floods beginning at Christmas-time.
The students have been working very hard planning this benefit which will include dinner and music, as well as a silent auction.
Thank you so much for your support of a great cause again this year.

1/24/08 Meeting
Hey everyone, hope we're all getting second semester off to a good start, so far Interact has. Dr. Diaz came again along with Ms. Rhosby, the Hispanic Rotary Interact member who is the go between for our project to help the victims of the flood in Chiapas. She briefed us on how dire the situation in Chiapas is.
Eleven towns have been completely submerged and don't exist anymore. Those residents will be permanently relocated but no one knows where to. So at this moment efforts are concentrated on providing humanitarian aid.
We've also discussed actually sending Interact members to Chiapas to deliver the money we raise. Right now we are focusing on raising just money. If we collect actual supplies we could have problems transporting them through Mexico to Chiapas, so until we're positive we can get supplies through we are only going to raise money.
So if any members are interested in going to Chiapas this summer, come to the informational meeting on Wednesday, January 30. The trip is going to last about seven days and is tentatively scheduled for the first week of June. The whole trip including food, transportation, and pocket money are probably going to be about $1000, but that's overestimating, because the plane tickets will only cost about $700.
Also there is a meeting scheduled on Feb. 7, and it's not in the planner, so make a note and don't forget to come. Hope to see you there!

1/10 Meeting
Hey everybody, hope you had a refreshing break, even though it went by way too fast. We had a nice time at the last meeting, we've started planning out our menu. So far we're thinking gorditas, camarones, horchata for drinks and chips and salsa as an appetizer. We'll be needing chicken, vegetables, and of course chips and salsa, so keep looking for donations and I'll post any other food items we'll need donated.

12/6 and 12/20 Meeting
Hey everyone, sorry about updating so late, but you know what it's like to be busy.
Dr. Diaz came to the 12/6 meeting and has asked for our club's help with two events. The first is the toy drive. The last day to distribute toys is this Saturday and all Interact members are welcome to help. It starts with breakfast at eight thirty and ends at nine o' clock at night. You can help by either volunteering your time, donating a brand new toy, gently used clothing, or money. You can bring your donations to Dr. Qualls' room and Alahna Miranda will pick them up.
Dr. Diaz also asked us to help provide relief for the victims of a hurricane in Chappas. This will be our new international cause that we are raising money for. In addition to the money we raise from the benefit, they are also accepting donations of gently used kitchen appliances, clothing, and other household items.
Plans for our benefit dinner are underway. We have formed the following committees.
Auction:
Jackie G., Nickie W., Chau N., Annie and Cassie Adams, and Kirsten D.
Decorating:
Rosi G., Maria J., Sammie S., Alahna M., and Kali
Food:
Lisa N., Alahna M., Rachel, Sammie S., Kali, and Jonathan
PR:
Alexis, Rachel, and Farid
Tomorrow is the beginning of Christmas break, yay! Everyone have fun, relax, recharge. Start thinking about auction items, donations, and other resources we could use to pull off this benefit. There is a mandatory meeting the Thursday we get back, so everyone be ready to start working with their committees, bringing in items, and asking for donations.
Interact will need to put together a list of businesses we would like to approach and run it by the advancement office to make sure we don't solicit businesses who have asked not to be solicited.
So we'll get the ball rolling on this as soon as we get back, but for now everyone enjoy our two week break. Happy holidays!

11/ 29 Update
Hey, hope everyone's been doing good. A lot has happened in the last month, and congratulations on Tommy to all our members who were in that, but now you have no excuse to miss meetings, so start coming. So, updates.
Domestic Project: The Apache Project is done and done. We've got everything packed up and shipped out, so thanks to Alahna and Mrs. Scott and everyone else who helped get that done. The Christmas Box House is canceled. Due to miscommunication and other difficulties we have decided to cancel it.
But recently our club presidents and sponsors have met with the Hispanic Rotary Club of Utah and decided to aid them in a new domestic project. The Hispanic Rotary Club is holding a toy drive that will distribute clothes and toys to needy children in surrounding cities, like Reno and Salt Lake City. Rotary Interact will be collecting toys for the Hispanic Club so if you have any old toys please bring them to the meeting tomorrow on Dec. 6 or on Friday.
Also, the dictionary project was a success. Several members and our proctors met with our sponsors, the Butlers, at Emerson Elementary to distribute dictionaries to some troubled third graders. The point of this project is to light a spark for reading for these kids and hopefully inspire them to strive for greater accomplishments through reading. I don't know if their thought process went quite so far, but they did seem excited. President Alex Guinney said "They were so cute and excited. They were running around and the girls were looking up words like valentine and the boys were looking up words like manslaughter". At least they were engaged, which is all we can really hope for.
International Project: We're going to tweak this a bit. Since we have struck a gold mine of resources by meeting the Hispanic Rotary Club, we would really like to take advantage of this by doing a Mexican cuisine dinner with entertainment. But nothing final yet, so come to the meetings and help us hash it out.
Attention: The president, Dr. Diaz, of the Hispanic Rotary Club is coming to our Interact meeting Thursday, so everyone should try to be there. Dr. Diaz is reputed to be a wonderful and charismatic speaker. It will be a great opportunity to hear what he has to say about the mission of Rotarians, so come and be inspired with new ideas for our projects and our roles as members of Rotary Interact.
Parting Note: I know that all of us have been busy, and it's understandable, but if you want to be in this club you have to really start committing. The benefit is in April, and we're going to start planning now. If we can maintain more or less a full attendance rather than the sparse numbers we've been getting we should be able to get a lot done and make this the best benefit we've had so far. It doesn't take much to meet every other week and fulfill the tasks we assign in between. I'm guessing you want to be in this club to do good and help others, and these next few months will be your chance to do that.

10/25 Meeting
OK, so the latest updates are:
International Project: We don't have one. Just kidding, but we have lost track of our contact from Mercy Hospital, so we are looking for a new organization to give money to. We still want to help Mexico, and we are still going to have the benefit in April with Mexican food. So plans for the fundraiser are still on, it's just a matter of finding a cause in Mexico to give the money to.
Domestic Project: Plans are definite to visit the Christmas Box House on December 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Only ten people will be able to go, so if you are interested contact an Interact Officer, most preferably Alex Guinney, Alahna Miranda, or me, RoseAnn Glade. If you can't find us there is going to be an open meeting on November 28 for Interact members going to the Christmas Box House. Only ten people can go, but let's face it, although we Interact members have big hearts, we have busier schedules, so people who say they're down for CBH might have to flake later. Please come to the November 28 meeting if you want to go to CBH so that if some of the first ten can't go, we already know who else we could call.
Open House: We have an Interact booth for open house on November 4, which is a Sunday. We'll start setting up in the morning and we'll be done at 2:30, which is when the Tommy matinee starts. Let us know if you're interested.
That's about it, hope everybody's having fun and that we'll see you at a meeting someday.

9/27 Meeting
Hey everybody, you didn't miss much at the last meeting. We just talked more about the party for the Christmas Box House. We're trying to figure out activities, games, prizes, and food. And we also talked about DUES, which no one has paid. Actually some people have, and we appreciate it. Everyone doesn't have to pay ten dollars up front, five dollars now and five dollars later would be fine. But we really do need those dues because unless we have money we won't be able to do much for our projects. So if we can't buy any treats or prizes for the Christmas Box House kids when we throw their party, it will be because not enough people paid their dues. Not trying the whole guilty conscience thing, but that's what's going to happen. People who don't pay dues will ruin Christmas for the foster children.
Anyways not much else to update you guys on, hope you're all doing well and we'll see you at the next meeting, or not.

9/13 Meeting
Hey everybody, hope you're all doing good. Here are the updates from the last meeting.
DOMESTIC PROJECT:
We will be able to go to the Christmas Box House and throw a party for the kids, and we're planning on doing it in November or December, we just need to confirm the date, so be brainstorming on activities we could do or resources you can offer, like rides and party supplies.
INTERNATIONAL PROJECT: We have decided to make Mercy Hospital our international project and we're now planning our fundraisers. The major fundraiser we hope to pull off will be a Nancy Miller-esque Day. We'd like to open the school on April 26 and have projects and activities going on all over the school. Parents can come in with their kids and or just drop them off. We're thinking along the lines of flower arranging and knitting for the adults, face painting and crafts for the kids, and the teenagers are sure to go to face painting, knitting, or somewhere in between. But it all depends on who is willing to come in and help. So if you guys know some awesome capoeira teacher or a Finnish basket weaver willing to donate their time and talents, send them our way, we're looking for all kinds of activities to keep everyone entertained. Along with these activities we'd like to serve Mexican food in the cafeteria, like how last year we served Sudanese food to raise money for Sudan.
DUES: Dues are ten dollars per member for the whole year, or five dollars a semester. Don't slack off, pay up or we're kicking you out.
That's about it, hope to see you at the next meeting, and if not hope you read the next post, and if not just have a good day.

Interact Meeting 8/23-8/30
Hey everybody, for all newcomers welcome to Interact, and to returning members welcome back :) A lot of you are interested in Interact but can't make it to meetings so just check this blog to keep updated and talk to other Interact members. You are going to be our associate members who only show up when we have projects to do on the weekends.
So far at the first two meetings we have discussed:
Our Officers-
Presidents: Alexandra/Margauex Guinney and Alahna Miranda
Vice President: Jackie Graham
Treasurer: Kim Harley
Secretary: Lisa Netzel
1/2 Treasurer 1/2 Secretary: RoseAnn Glade
All the officers are seniors except Jackie, who is a junior. Go Jackie.
International Project-
Mercy Hospital is based in central California and every few months sends a team of doctors and nurses into Mexico. This team performs medical surgeries for people too poor to pay for them, like the operation to repair a cleft lip. Mercy Hospital also runs a clinic in Mexico. Interact is discussing the possibility of sending supplies and aid to the clinic and doctors. Many hospitals in the U.S. are forced to throw out perfectly sterile and unused supplies because of strict regulations and we are discussing getting those from hospitals and sending them to Mercy Hospital. We are still gathering info on how we can help so if you can think of anything talk to Dr. Qualls or one of the officers, and we'll also keep you updated.
Domestic Project-
At the end of the school year as we all cleaned out our lockers there were boxes around the school where we could donate our unused school supplies and books. This is called the Apache Project and all the items donated went to the Apache Reservation in Arizona. There were so many items donated that Andy Scott only managed to deliver half of it when he visited them over the summer. We still have about 250-300 pounds of supplies to deliver, and we're planning on shipping it in boxes.
A closer project we are working on is the Christmas Box House, which is where foster kids can go when they are between homes. If the last foster home didn't work out, then kids go to The Christmas Box House and live there until a new home is found for them. If possible, Interact would like to visit one of these houses and throw a Halloween or Thanksgiving party for the kids. We still don't know if we really can, but we're going to try.
So, if any of you can think of any contacts, information, or ideas for other projects we could do, let one of our officers, another member, or Dr. Qualls know and we'll talk about it at the next meeting.
Dues-
Our dues this year are five dollars a semester per member, so that means ten dollars a year. Not too steep, and we'll use the money for club activities, like buying candy for the Christmas Box House children, I promise.
That's about it so far, I'll keep you guys updated, have fun not going to meetings and doing other stuff besides Interact :) Ha, just kidding
