DRESS AND GROOMING CODE         (pp. 21-22 in the 2007-08 Student/Parent Handbook)

Implicit in a studentŐs acceptance at Judge Memorial is a commitment to abide by the uniform and grooming code. A school uniform fosters the idea that a studentŐs uniqueness derives from within, not from his or her appearance. In addition, dress regulations contribute to a positive school learning environment and lend dignity to the school community. The principal, assisted by the deans of students, interprets the application of the dress code. The parent or guardian is responsible for purchasing the proper uniform as indicated on page 22 of the Student/Parent Handbook.

Students will be in uniform at all times during school hours (8:00 a.m. -2:45 p.m.), with exceptions during p.e. and dance classes. Students are required to be in full uniform for all assemblies and field trips. Students who are not in compliance with uniform standards will not be allowed to attend class until the problem is corrected and may receive disciplinary consequences.

Personal Grooming Standards

If the personal grooming habits of a student become a distraction to the education process or make a statement contrary to the mission and philosophy of the school, the administration will take measures to end the distraction or contrary statement. The following list provides guidelines for minimum standards, and should not be considered exhaustive. School administration reserves the right to define appropriate and inappropriate grooming and accessories on an individual basis as needed.

1.   School attire will be neat, clean, and properly worn. This includes tucking in the shirt, buttoning down the collar, leaving no more than 2 buttons undone on the Oxford shirt, wearing pants from the waist and not hemming the skirt too short or rolling the waistband.  Skirt hems must be no more than 3 inches above the knee.  Apparel will not be altered or allowed to appear unkempt. Students may not write on or customize any article of clothing.

2.   Hair must be neatly groomed and not cover the studentŐs eyes. No extreme hair styles, including dreadlocks or mohawks, no unnatural coloring, no scarves or athletic headbands.

3.   T-shirts worn under the uniform shirt must be a solid, matching color without writing on them. T-shirt sleeves must not extend beyond uniform shirt sleeves.

4.   Tights, hose, or socks worn with skirts or shorts must be consistent with uniform appearance. No patterns, fishnet stockings, or non-matching colors.

5.   Makeup, jewelry and belts must be modest and appropriate to the academic setting.  Belts are not required, but if worn, must be worn in the belt loops.

6.   No tattoos or body piercing other than one earring per ear.

Standards for Special Dress Days

JEANS FOR JESUS: Students may be invited to contribute a small amount toward a charity cause in return for being allowed to wear jeans on a designated day. Jeans are blue or black denim pants, skirt, or shorts which are neat, clean, and appropriate for school, worn with a uniform shirt.

FREE DRESS: Free dress days may be approved on rare occasions as a reward for participation in a school fundraiser or other activity. Attire must be modest and appropriate to the academic setting. No tank tops, short skirts, short shorts, bare midriffs, torn clothing, inappropriate logos, hats, etc. Personal grooming standards must be followed.
