2010-11 Judge Memorial Book Awards Announced
Every year Judge Memorial Catholic High School honors six seniors with a distinguished book award from the local alumni clubs of six prestigious colleges and universities. The selection process is similar to the process a highly selective college might use in admissions. Honored on May 23, 2010, with the prestigious 2010-11 Judge Memorial Book Awards were:
- Smith College Alumni Club – presented to Sierra Brimhall
- University of Notre Dame Club of Utah – presented to Ben Cook
- Georgetown University Alumni Club – presented to Jeff Scott
- Wellesley College Alumni Club – presented to Mary Zost
- Harvard University Alumni Club – presented to Matt Kirkegaard
- Harvard University Alumni Club – presented to Chase Pribble
The initial selection process is based on PSAT scores, GPA, and the number of honors and AP courses each student took over the last two years. Using that data, members of the Book Awards Selection Committee narrowed the list down to the top twenty-five juniors, and asked for the teachers of honors and AP junior classes for input on those students. The ten juniors with the most “points” based on all the criteria: highest test scores, GPA, most number of honors/AP courses, AND highest faculty ratings, were asked to write an essay. That essay was evaluated by a committee and the top six finalists were selected for these book awards. The students who are actually getting book awards may not be the highest test takers or have the highest GPAs, but they scored highly on every aspect of the selection process.
