Judge Memorial Summer Reading 2010
Summer reading is required for all Judge Memorial Catholic High School students, including members of the incoming ninth grade class. Reading lists are distributed to all students before the end of the current school year. Please review the 2010 required Summer Reading List for Judge students in grades nine through 12.
A student's critical reading skills are fundamental to academic success and essential to continued success in college. Reading builds a student's vocabulary and comprehension skills, enhances communication skills, and improves writing abilities. Required summer reading is a tool that enables our students to stretch, develop and stay engaged throughout the year.
Summer reading for a number of other courses is also listed here, including AP European History, AP U.S. History, and AP Psychology. Additional updates will be announced as available via Web postings and e-mails. These books will be available on the e-Follett online virtual bookstore by June 1, (http://www.judgememorial.bkstr.com). Happy reading, Bulldogs!

Over the summer, please read ONE of the five books listed below. You don't need a particular edition and can check the book out from a library if you do not wish to buy it.
Take notes as you read, not on every single thing, but on twenty or so ideas or experiments that catch your interest, disturb you, or make you want to find out more. During the first week of class we will have an open-note quiz on the book. You will simply be asked to elaborate in a structured way on several of your items of interest. So don’t get stressed and try to memorize things; just read and enjoy the whole book and don't forget to write some ideas down and save your notes. The books to choose from are:
Animals in Translation by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson (0-15-603144-2)
Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell (978-0-316-01066-5)
This is Your Brain on Music by Daniel J. Levitin (978-0-452-28852-2)
Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman (0-316-11350-6)
The Spiritual Brain: A Neuroscientist's Case for the Existence of the Soul by Mario Beauregard and Denyse O’Leary (978-0-06-085883-4 or 978-0-06-162598-5)
