Judge Memorial plans 2010 Commencement Celebrations

Judge Memorial Catholic High School will confer diplomas on the 183 members of the Class of 2010 on Sunday, May 30. Prior to the Commencement Ceremony, to be held at 11 a.m. at Abravanel Hall, the Judge community will gather to celebrate the Baccalaureate Mass. Baccalaureate will be held on Thursday, May 27, at 6:50 p.m., at The Cathedral of the Madeleine.

The annual Baccalaureate Mass is a beautiful liturgical ceremony, celebrated by Rev. Msgr. J. Terrence Fitzgerald, Vicar General of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, and con-celebrated by numerous diocesan priests and deacons. The Mass is offered in thanksgiving for the blessings God has bestowed upon the graduates and their families. Faculty and administrators participate in the academic procession; students offer readings and prayers; and a number of prestigious awards are presented, including the “Christ the King” award. Graduates find Baccalaureate to be a meaningful way to mark the beginning of graduation celebrations.

Sister Catherine Kamphaus, Superintendent of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, and Rick Bartman, Principal of Judge Memorial will confer diplomas at the Commencement ceremony. The morning begins with an innovation to the senior class by Sister Genevra Rolf, Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, The culmination of the academic year, Commencement offers the entire Judge community an opportunity to celebrate the success of our students.

Commencement highlights include the student addresses, this year to be given by co-valedictorians Maximilian Lamb and Parker Mildenhall, respectively.

Maximilian Lamb is the son of Jeanette Sawaya of Salt Lake City and Bill Lamb of Salt Lake City. A graduate of the J.E. Cosgriff Memorial Catholic School and a member of St. Ambrose Parish, Max also earned Academic All-State honors in fall 2009 for cross-country and in spring for track and field. A volunteer at Cosgriff’s extended day program, he has also served at 10,000 Villages and as a teacher’s aide at Cosgriff. In addition to cross country, Max participates in lacrosse, track, Bulldog Press, Peer Ministry and National Honor Society, where he was named one of the four vice-presidents for this school year. Max was crowned the Region XI individual cross-country champion this year while leading the boys’ squad to a second place overall finish. He has competed in both the Simplot Games and in the Foot Locker West Regional cross country events. Max has been recognized academically a number of times, including honor roll status all four years, and receiving Academic Excellence Awards in German I, II, and III; honors biology; AP biology; English; geography; mathematics; social studies; theology; and science. He was a member of the spring 2010 Judge Math Team that finished first in the state competition in the 3A division. Last spring, he was honored by the University of Utah's College of Humanities for outstanding performance on the 2008-09 National German Exam. This fall, he received the Judge Memorial Book Award awarded by the University of Notre Dame. Max will attend the University of Pennsylvania, and although his college major is undecided, although he is leaning toward majoring in either engineering or pre-med.

Parker Mildenhall is the son of David & Mindy Leo of Salt Lake City and Greg Mildenhall of Midvale. Parker, a 2010 National Merit Finalist, also earned Academic All-State honors in fall 2009 for cross-country and in spring for track and field. He is a graduate of St. Vincent de Paul’s Catholic School and has volunteered with both 10,000 Villages and the Utah Food Bank. A recipient of the fall 2009 Judge Memorial Book Award presented by Harvard University, Parker has received Academic Excellence Awards in computer science, English, foreign language, mathematics, science, social studies and theology. A consistent honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society, Parker has also participated in swimming, track and field, and the Bulldog Press. He was a member of the spring 2009 state Judge Math Team that finished third in the 11th grade small school competition. He was a member of the spring 2009 Judge Mathfax team that captured first place in the Division 1 Catholic Math League Algebra 2 Championship. He received the school’s 2008-09 Sister Louise Marie Award for Most Inspirational Player in cross country. In fall 2009, Parker finished third in the Region XI individual cross-country champion this year on the boys’ squad that finished in second place overall. He has competed in both the Simplot Games and in the Foot Locker West Regional cross country events. Park will attend the University of Portland in the fall, and is interested in a major in the fields of sports science or kinesiology.

“Max and Parker are outstanding students, and have been leaders in and out of the classroom at Judge,” said Bartman. “They represent a standard of academic excellence to which many high school students strive. We are very proud of them, and all members of the Class of 2010. We look forward to celebrating with these graduates, and with their family and friends.”
