Summer 2010 Opportunities
Judge Memorial Catholic High School offers a variety of academic and enrichment courses designed for all grades and interests. Students are encouraged to use these summer opportunities to develop a talent or interest in the arts, humanities, or sciences, or to get preparation for high school or specific courses. Whatever you decide, we look forward to seeing you on campus this summer, Bulldogs!
Parents/Guardians Please Note: A confirmation of registration and student schedule will be mailed to you upon receipt of request and payment in full. If you register early, you are assured a place. - 2010 Judge Memorial required summer reading lists are announced. All summer reading should be completed by August 22, 2010. Summer Plans? R-E-A-D, Bulldogs, R-E-A-D!
- A completed summer opportunities registration form (see file attachments below) along with payment in full for selected classes is due no later than Friday, June 4, 2010. A $50.00 late registration fee will apply after June 4, 2010.

The following three freshmen classes are scheduled at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., and/or 11 a.m. depending upon enrollment. These classes meet for 12 weekdays from Monday, June 14 to Thursday, July 1. Students may take all three classes unless they are taking Accelerated Algebra. In this case, students may take only Study/Student Skills or Culinary Arts or Physical Conditioning, along with Accelerated Algebra.
MATH/ALGEBRA SKILLS ($100.00):
This class is designed to teach students pre-algebra skills to prepare them for the rigors of the Algebra classes they will be taking here at Judge Memorial. This class will assist students who do not have a lot of Algebra experience and would like to prepare for high school Algebra. Instructor: Ms. Angie Rowland.
PREP FOR HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH ($100.00):
This course includes assessment of your present writing skills and identifying your strengths and weakness in order to succeed in English your freshmen year. We will cover different modes of writing for a variety of audiences that could help you not only in English class but also Religion, Social Studies and Science. We will also include book circles, which are a fun way to read and share with classmates, and are used in many of our English classes. You will need to purchase and bring to class, “When the Emperor was Divine” by Julie Otsuka. Instructor: Mrs. Pam Oles.
STUDY/STUDENT SKILLS ($90.00):
This class is designed to teach students how to learn and study more effectively, and to orient students into the personal and social responsibilities of belonging to the Judge Memorial community. Topics include: organization, note taking, time management, and test taking strategies, memorization, reading and outlining textbooks; and making your high school experience a most positive and productive one. Instructor: Ms. Dianna Pugh.
The following courses are the remainder of 2010 Summer Opportunities. Some courses do offer one-half credit. Please read each description closely for details on grade requirements, course dates and times, prerequisites, instructors and contacts as details vary from course to course.
ACCELERATED ALGEBRA ($250.00):
(One-Half Math Credit) This class is for those freshmen who will be taking Geometry/Algebra II or need additional preparation in Algebra courses. Twelve chapters of an average Algebra text will be covered. (Textbooks will be provided.) Class limited to 30 students. Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Friday, June 14 to July 2. Final qualifying test for Geometry/Algebra II will be given July 2 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. as part of the class. INTRODUCTION TO PHYSICAL CONDITIONING ($250.00):
(One-Half P.E. Credit) This course presents guidelines for individuals to improve their physical fitness by incorporating fitness, pre and post testing, weight lifting, ply metrics, speed and agility training along with health and diet issues. Meets in the Weight Room for 15 week days, 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, June 14 to July 2. Instructors: Coach Marquis DuPre and Coach Stan Finn. CULINARY ARTS–LEVEL I & II ($250.00):
(One-Half Art Credit) (Level II Pre-requisite: Level I) Level I and Level II will be taught by Master Chef Timothy Soran. Class will meet in the Judge Cafeteria for 12 weekdays, Monday-Thursday, June 14 to July 1. Level I offered from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Level II offered from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Say goodbye to Mac & Cheese! You will learn to cook healthy and delicious meals while also receiving your Food Handlers’ permit. The $250.00 fee includes all food supplies, training and Food Handlers’ permit. Class limited to 20 students per level. Instructor: Mr. Tim Soran.
FITNESS FOR LIFE New This Year! ($250.00):
(One-Half P.E. Credit) As a requirement for graduation, this class is designed to educate students about the benefits of exercise outside of the traditional physical education classroom. Students will participate in weightlifting, running, and aerobic activity. Topics to be covered will be body composition, diet and nutrition, exercise, physiology and mental imagery. Classes will be held Monday through Thursday, June 14 through July 1. A detailed class schedule will be handed out the first day of class. Students need to come prepared for both classroom instruction and activities beginning Monday June 14 at 9 a.m. Classroom activities will require a ½” three ring binder with lined notepaper. Physical activities will require shorts, T-shirt and workout shoes. Instructor: Ms. Jeanette Sawaya.
INTRODUCTION TO FLASH ANIMATION ($150.00):
This computer technology course is for students entering ninth through 12th grade in the fall of 2010. Classes will meet in the Computer Lab, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 14-17. Instructor: Ms. Darlene Hymel.
WRITING THE COLLEGE ADMISSIONS ESSAY New This Year! ($200.00): Need Help Writing Your College Admission Essay? Writing the college admission essay can be a daunting task. It is often the scariest part of the admission process; but it doesn’t have to be. Why is the essay even required? College admission boards consider the essay to be the opportunity for them to get to know the students beyond test scores and transcripts; the essay gives students the opportunity to highlight their distinctive qualities and strengths, and it allows the admitting officers to really hear your voice and discover the true you. In this workshop, you will draft and revise a personal reflective essay about your past, and your unique experiences. The workshop is designed to help students create a finalized version of the admissions essay, ready to submit to colleges. Class will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Thursday, June 14-17. For rising juniors and seniors, grades 11 and 12. Instructor: Mrs. Elaine Peterson.
METAL SCULPTURE "Red Heat" ($225.00):
This arts course is for students entering ninth through 12th grade in the fall of 2010. Class will meet in the Art Room, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, June 14-19. Fee includes all the art supplies needed. Students will need to provide their own leather gloves. Class size is limited to 12 students. Instructor Mr. Tom Bettin will be joined by guest instructors.
DRIVER’S TRAINING New This Year! ($250.00): Students must be at least 15 years old to enroll in this program. A parent’s signature is required at time of registration for students under 18. This course will consist of the following state requirements: nine two-hour classes which will include lectures, video instruction, practice quiz and a variety of learning activities, six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction/training, and six hours of observation. Classes will be held at Judge Memorial, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday through Friday, beginning June 14 and running through Friday, June 25. Instructors: Wright Driving School, LLC.
SUMMER THEATRE '10 ($250.00):
Come be a part of Judge Memorial's magical theatre tradition. This year's production is Disney's Alice in Wonderland, Jr. This class is for students entering grades five through nine in the Fall of 2010. Class meets in the Judge Auditorium Monday through Friday, June 14 to June 25, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a lunch break from 12 to 12:30 p.m. (students must provide their own lunch and drink). From the audition process to the final show, all students will be involved in early aspect of "Theatre!". Fee includes the cost of producing the musical, playbooks, costumes, scenery and six complementary tickets.
