Regents Scholarship Planning
During the spring registration process for underclassmen at Judge Memorial Catholic High School (freshmen, sophomores and juniors), the guidance counselors encouraged those students who had mostly As and Bs on their transcript to consider certain courses that would make them eligible for the Utah Regents' Scholarship when they are seniors applying to college.
As stated on the Utah State Board of Regents' Web site, "In 2008, the Utah State Legislature created the Regents' Scholarship. This scholarship encourages Utah high school students to prepare for college academically and financially by taking a rigorous course of study and saving for college."
Parents are reminded that this scholarship is very attainable for many of our top students. Even if your child is a freshman and, at this point, not considering attending an in-state college, qualifying for this scholarship is an attractive option if plans change during his or her high school career. Students who qualify for the Regents' Scholarship may also qualify for additional financial aid opportunities such, as the Academic Competitiveness Grant, by completing the FAFSA application.
If you would like to make a change to your child's schedule for next year because they are not currently enrolled in one or more of the required classes for this scholarship or if you want to check your child's status as it relates to this scholarship, please contact your student's counselor (801-517-2141).
The Regents' Scholarship may be used at any public college or university in the Utah System of Higher Education, as well as at Brigham Young University, LDS Business College and Westminster College.
Please check the Board of Regents Web site (www.utahsbr.edu/acad01i.html) for more information and encourage your child to stay on track for this beneficial scholarship.
Attached are two PDF files provided by the Board of Regents: Criteria and Required Core Courses. These two files list information from 2008-09. Information, criteria, and deadlines for 2010 application process will be available in early summer 2009. Once the Board of Regents updates their site, we will make the information available on our Web site.
