Summer Programs
Why attend a summer study program?
Summer study programs are good opportunities for students who want to challenge themselves academically and experience college life before they actually finish high school. These programs can give students the opportunity to demonstrate their seriousness of purpose, clarify their study intentions, and build their academic credentials with good, measurable grades. They can also be a first chance to see a campus a student might be interested in, and to meet faculty.
Are there advantages to going to a summer school at the college to which you hope to get accepted?
Varying opinions from admissions officers and high school college counselors: “When reviewing applicants for admission, college admission folks try very hard to figure out whether or not our college is a ‘good fit’ for an applicant….If I have seen that an applicant had the opportunity to experience areas that we specialize in…I know that the student has the personal qualities that would make them successful at my college.”
“I’ve seen no evidence of that [advantage to acceptance] at larger or the most selective colleges, but at some small liberal arts colleges the fact that students have spent time there and enjoy the environment (which they can address in their applications and/or interviews) does seem to increase the odds of admittance.”
Becoming involved in a summer study program takes an investment of time, money, and energy. The following questions will help you evaluate programs you are considering: What is the focus of the program? What identification procedures are used to select students? What is the reputation of the program? What is the quality of the faculty? What are the characteristics of the residential program? What are all of the costs? How will students be evaluated?
