Crews race on Great Salt Lake

Prep Rowing - By Tim Yanni Special to The Tribune Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday, October 15, 2005

About 50 high school rowers competed in the Head of the Great Salt Lake at the Great Salt Lake Marina on Saturday. In addition to the high schoolers, who competed for Waterford High and the Utah Crew club team, the Head of the Great Salt Lake featured 20 participants from Great Salt Lake Rowing, an adult rowing club. The clubs plan to make the event an annual fall occurrence Great Salt Lake Rowing has called the marina home since the late 1980s, but only recently became involved with Utah Crew, a club consisting of students from Judge Memorial, Rowland Hall, East and West high schools. "All the kids had so much fun,” said MarJanna Dahl, a Utah Crew coach and one of the event's officials. “The turnout was tremendous. We're so pleased that our programs have grown so much over the last two years.” The Head of the Great Salt Lake consists of 6,000-meter races. Rowers in a head race go along a defined course consisting of complicated turns. Waterford's Annie Agle won the girls' single race. Bengt Grua and Colin Zweibel won the boys' doubles, and Utah Crew claimed victories in the girls' novice fours and eights, as well as the boys' varsity eights. Waterford won the boys' novice fours and eights. The Head of the Great Salt Lake was the kickoff event for the clubs' rowing season. They will compete as one team Nov. 5, when they travel to a meet in Marina Del Rey, Calif.
