FRAPPIER'S HAT TRICK GIVES JUDGE WIN OVER UNION

The Judge Memorial Girls Soccer Team went into Roosevelt looking to sustain the momentum after having earned 3 victories and 1 tie in the previous 5 games. It was Senior Night for the Union Cougars, and their side showed a lot of pride with tough, spirited play despite their winless region record.

The Cougars challenged every ball with swarming defense and forced the Lady Bulldogs to utilize good team play to overcome Union's tireless effort. In the end, team play won out and Judge's skilled midfield consistently found the seams in the Union back line to give the forwards scores of chances to test the opposing goalkeeper.

While many of the earned opportunities were nulled by offsides penalties, Senior Captain Kelly Frappier was still able to find the back of the net 3 times for a hat trick, the first of the season for Judge Memorial's Varsity team. The score at the end of the game was Bulldogs 3, Cougars 0.

Judge once again showed strong defensive play from Susie Bonn, Alex May, Simone Olive, Kathryn Martinez and Chelsea Reimer. The back unit combined with goalkeepers Natalie Przybus and Kasi Stults to limit Union's chances and earn the shutout win.

J.V. wins 8-0:

The Junior Varsity Girls Soccer team continued on a positive track with their second win in a row after dropping a game to Wasatch. Goals were scored by Kiersten Berg, Amanda Khoury, Sammie Gonzales, Alexis Martinez, Alex Hallows, Ellen Sliwinski, Gabbie Matinkhah and Annie Loader.

BULLDOGS SPOOK RAVENS - GET OVERTIME WIN

The Judge Memorial Lady Bulldogs took care of business against Region 10 foe Waterford Tuesday evening with a satisfying overtime victory 2-1. For the third time this season the Bulldogs went to extra time, having lost their first - tied the second - and finally this time, grounding the Ravens with a Kiersten Berg goal off a Maddy Cartwright assist. It marks JM’s third win, with only one loss, in the last five games.

The early stages of the first half showed the Bulldogs in good form offensively and defensively. But the promising start transformed into uncertainty 18 minutes into the game, when the Dogs defense broke down badly on the right side giving up an easy goal. For the rest of the half Judge struggled to put together anything offensively.

But it was a different story after intermission, as the Lady Bulldogs consistently moved the ball with purpose...finally resulting in Kiersten Berg's first goal of the game, this one from a perfect ball by senior midfielder Corinne Davies. The Judge defense and keeper Natalie Warner turned away every Waterford effort the rest of the way, setting the stage for the overtime heroics by Cartwright and Berg. Once again a confident game was played by the Judge midfield, particularly Carly Bartel, Kelsey Lockwood and stopper Sadie Young.

The win avenges an earlier season loss to Waterford...and puts JM in the hunt for at least a second place finish...with the Bulldogs trailing first place Wasatch and a game behind Park City in Region 10.

JUNIOR VARSITY LET’S IT RIP

Another terrific effort was put in by the Judge JV, polishing off Waterford for the second time this season - the final score 2-0. Judge got off to a great start thanks to midfielder Annie Loader who scored early in the game. Ellen Sliwinski notched the second goal. The second half featured dominant play in which the Bulldogs simply out-hustled, out-shot, out-possessed, and out-played their opponent yet couldn't find the back of the net. The win puts the JV squad at 7-2-3 on the season. Natalie Przybus and Kasi Stults combined again for the shutout.

BULLDOGS TIE WASPS - STRONG PLAY CONTINUES

The Lady Bulldogs kept a promise to each other and continued their string of solid play with a memorable 1-1 tie in double overtime against 3A’s number one ranked squad…the Wasps of Wasatch High, Saturday morning at McCarthey Stadium.

Seeking to improve on a lackluster performance three weeks earlier in Heber City, the Bulldogs took the field determined there would be no letdown following a big win against Park City earlier in the week. Judge took the lead with a spectacular goal from midfielder Kathryn Martinez. Martinez was the beneficiary of a perfectly placed corner from the right foot of Maddy Cartwright, soaring above a Wasatch defender and blasting it past the helpless keeper. It was Kathryn’s fourth highlight reel goal in the past four games.

Coach Jim Ngo implemented a defensive strategy which stressed the importance of denying Wasatch’s excellent attacking players easy touches on the ball. A swarming defense kept the Wasps out of rhythm for long sections of the first half. JM went to the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.

Much of the second half possession favored the Wasps though their high scoring attack was mostly under control thanks to strong goalkeeping by freshman Natalie Warner. Fronting Warner was senior Laura Becker who had a strong effort filling in for injured sweeper Susie Bonn. Freshman defender Ellen Sliwinski was superb in the second half consistently shutting down Wasatch strikers.

Eventually the game went to a second overtime and the determined Judge side pressed hard for the win, but were held off the scoreboard by the Wasatch defense on at least three memorable occasions. On the defensive end Warner stopped the Wasps best chance to take the lead late in the game as she came strong to a ball played into the box after Carly Bartel was whistled for a foul. Warner got the worse of a brutal collision, but got to her feet and managed another big stop before this one was over. One of JM’s best chances came with two minutes left as the Wasps goalie turned a way a Corinne Davies left-footed blast that looked likely to end the game in the Bulldogs favor. Wasatch forward Kim Parker (who beat the Bulldogs at Rice Eccles Stadium a year ago with a last minute goal) saved the day for the Wasps again when she headed clear another great chance, this one a shot from Bartel. The game ended with one last Bulldog push as the keeper deflected away Maddy Cartwright’s corner kick.

Wasatch ran it’s record to 5-1-1 in region and 10-2-1 overall. Judge moved to 2-3-1 in region. Up next a big home game against third place Waterford on Tuesday.

JUNIOR VARSITY LOSES 3-2 In only it’s second loss of the year, the Lady Bulldogs JV failed to hold a 2-1 halftime lead and succumbed to Wasatch 3-2. Alexis Martinez and Carrie Curtin scored for the Bulldogs, with Amanda Khoury picking up an assist.

LADY BULLDOGS GET CONFIDENT - BEAT PARK CITY

The bright green and red turf illuminated by the powerful new lights of McCarthey Stadium may have given the annual showdown between Park City and Judge a glossy new look, but the tone on the field was pure old school. In a game like so many before the Region 10 soccer rivals battled in classic style to the end - Judge Memorial coming out on top 2 to 1 - in what Coach Jim Ngo called "an extraordinary victory”.

It was a night when the Judge line-up had to be dramatically rearranged – in some cases with the help of players who’d seen most of their minutes during JV games. Starting defender and senior Captain Alex May was out with a shoulder injury, while the backbone of the Bulldog defense Sadie Young couldn’t suit up due to illness. Coach Ngo juggled the defensive line-up, sliding Susie Bonn to center back where she put in a flawless performance. On the offensive end, co-captain Corinne Davies was also unable to go, meaning Maddy Cartwright filled in at forward. As a result Kelsey Lockwood and freshman Gabbie Matinkah logged major minutes in the middle. Which opened up a slot for senior defender Kathryn Martinez to move to the left midfield position.

That, as it turned out, may have been the most important adjustment to the Bulldog line-up. Martinez, who’d already put in more than 45 minutes on the JV side, was active and ready – especially early in the first half when Kiersten Berg raced down the right sideline in impressive fashion, sending a ball across the Park City goal mouth. Park City failed to clear the cross and the ball made it’s way to Gabbie Matinkah who found Martinez right outside the six, where Kathryn blasted home a convincing shot. The home side was up 1-0, moving the ball beautifully and playing with the conviction and confidence that had long been missing.

Meanwhile midfielder Carly Bartel was putting in the best half of her season, slowing down the Park City center attack, scooping up balls like she had magnets on her cleats, and sending timely passes left, right and forward. In the back, keeper Natalie Warner was a welcome sight, charging hard on anything entering the box and letting the PC side know that nothing was going to get to the net easily.

The halftime talk focused on doing more of the same, and the Bulldogs were able to do just that after intermission. Maddy Cartwright gathered a ball just past midfield, saw a bit of space and dazzled the crowd with a blast from 35 yards out that curled into the left corner of the net putting the Bulldogs up 2-0. But if anyone thought this was going to be an easy win, they were mistaken. The Miners ramped it up getting their first goal on an impressive finish midway through the second half.

But the Lady Bulldogs were up to the challenge. Late in the game the defense locked…Warner controlled the eighteen, Bonn kept things clean in the middle, and marking backs Chelsey Reimer and Simone Olive, with help from Erica DeHerrera and Ellen Sliwinski, weren’t about to let anyone through. The final whistle sounded and the Bulldogs were confidently on the winning side in the first installment of the annual battle with their fiercest rivals. And looking a little stronger going into a big weekend game against 3A’s number one team Wasatch.

JV CONTINUES UNBEATEN STRING IN SCORELESS DRAW

The Lady Bulldog Junior Varsity squad continued it’s impressive play with a 0-0 draw against a skilled Park City team. It is JV’s 7th straight game without a loss…upping it’s record to 6-1-3, it’s only loss coming against 4A’s top school Bountiful. Kasi Stults and Natalie Przybus combined for the shutout. Amanda Khoury, Laura Lighty and Sammy Gonzales all had exceptional games for the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Uintah to take on Region 10 foe Uintah, coming up on the losing end of a 2-1 result. Tess Burick scored for JM. The game was marred by a bewildering non-call by the referees, when forward Corinne Davies was thrown to the ground by the Uintah goalkeeper in the box. Play was allowed to continue, without penalty, and the Judge girls were introduced to the joys of playing against a one-sided crew of officials. JV triumphed against Uintah 6-2, with Amanda Khoury and Alexis Martinez getting two goals apiece, and other scores added by Sammy Gonzales and Kiersten Berg.

In an earlier home game against Union, the Bulldogs went home winners 7-0. Kelsey Lockwood and Kathryn Martinez notched two goals apiece, with Simone Olive, Corinne Davies and Tess Burick also scoring. JV won against Union 5-0.

On September 6th the Bulldogs fell to Waterford 4 to 2, with goals coming from Maddy Cartwright and Kiersten Berg. The JV squad spanked Waterford 3 to 1.
