Judge Memorial
The Bulldogs have been cruising in Region 10 play so far. At 5-0, Judge has lost only two sets in region, beating Wasatch in straight games twice. Seniors Alex Clark, Ginny Hicks, Shea Zanolli, Sarah Villreal and Hannah Lam are hoping to keep up the good play in what could be a big final year.
West
The Panthers have lost four straight after going on a three-match winning streak. Region 2 play hasn’t been kind to West. After losses to Kearns and Taylorsville, West was edged by Hunter 3-2 on Sept. 27. The playoffs are still a possibility for the Panthers, but they’ll have to turn things around quickly.
East
The Leopards are off to a solid 2-1 start in Region 6 play. In a 3-0 win over Clearfield on Sept. 29, Gui Tela’ez had 11 kills and four blocks to go along with Ata Utuone’s 10 kills. Bountiful and Woods Cross look to be the strength of Region 6, but East is a surprising third-place team. The Leopards played Bountiful closely in a 3-1 loss on Sept. 27.
Highland
A 3-0 win over Cyprus on Sept. 27 saved the Rams from consecutive winless seasons. Leitu Collins and Ali Eggli combined for 19 kills and Xela Larios and Moti Finau combined for 33 digs in the program’s first win since the 2009 state quarterfinals. It was the first step in Highland’s effort to return to the days of playoff volleyball.
Park City
The Miners have yet to find a win in 2011 but played well earlier in the season in 3-2 and 3-1 losses to Wasatch and Juan Diego, respectively. Taking advantage of the struggles of Union and Uintah, as well as coming up with a win over Wasatch, could go a long way for Park City.
Rowland Hall
It took a 17-15 win in the fifth game, but the Winged Lions pulled out a 3-2 win over South Summit Sept. 27. Marisa Eng led the way for Rowland Hall with 14 kills and 28 digs. Ikwo Frank added nine kills and 13 assists and Shelby Matsumara had 21 assists. Eng had 11 kills and 30 digs in a narrow 3-2 loss to Waterford on Sept. 29. The Winged Lions led the fifth game 13-9 before succumbing to a Waterford comeback.
