Prep volleyball analysis for Oct 18: City

Judge Memorial

The Bulldogs are storming through Region 10 and look like one of the top teams in 3A. Juan Diego gave Judge one of its toughest tests of the season in a 3-2 Bulldog victory Oct. 8. Judge won the game by a total of five points across five sets. Taylor Gustafson and Sarah Villareal combined for 47 assists and Regan Briesacher had 19 kills.

West

The Panthers struggled at the Utah Classic, going 0-3 and only winning one set. West can still get into the playoffs by closing the season strong. Four Region 2 teams will make the postseason and the Panthers are stuck in fifth place at 1-4.

East

At 5-10, the Leopards have already won more games than they have over the past four seasons combined (four). They have their most wins since a 14-8 season in 2005 that took them to the playoffs. East is trying to lock up at least fourth place in Region 6 and get back to the postseason. They’ll have to surpass Highland to do so.

Highland

The Rams put themselves in playoff contention with a 3-1 win over Clearfield on Oct. 4. Xela Larios had 26 digs and Lindy Hughes and Anna McKonkie combined for 29 digs. Highland has slid as of late, however, putting their postseason hopes in jeopardy. Finishing the season with another win over Clearfield would help out.

Park City

The Miners have struggled on the court this season and are buried at the bottom of Region 10. Getting into the playoffs is an uphill battle for Park City at this point and fairly unlikely. Their lone win came against Wasatch 3-1 on Oct. 4. All of their set wins came by four points or less. Park City got a moral victory of sorts by winning a set against a tough Judge Memorial team Oct. 11.

Rowland Hall

The Winged Lions are most likely going to finish the season in fourth place in Region 14, which will be good enough for the playoffs. The region has proven to be a deep one, with multiple teams capable of a deep run in the playoffs. In a 3-1 win over Maeser Prep Oct. 11, Marissa Ing had 11 kills and 14 digs.
