Prep soccer analysis for Oct 25: City

Judge Memorial

The Bulldogs never did quite find a supporting cast for Danielle Gaztambide who finished third in scoring in 3A with 25 goals. Judge used a 4-2 win over Uintah Oct. 10 to get in the playoffs but lost to Cedar 4-1 Oct. 12. Julia Wheatley scored twice and Layne Huber and Gaztambide scored in the win over Uintah.

West

The Panthers season came to a violent halt when eventual state champion Alta knocked them out of the playoffs 8-0 on October 13. Seniors like Alli Uchida and Minnie Horvath shouldn’t hang their heads after leaving West with two straight playoff appearances—notching a win in both—and a Region 2 last year. West is in much better shape than it was even two years ago and has talent left over to continue making strides.

East

A team with plenty of questions at the beginning of the season developed into one of the state’s best, but ultimately came up short of the pinnacle in a 1-0 semifinal loss to Timpanogos Oct. 18. Timpanogos went on to win the state title. The Leopards put together a solid season complete with a deep playoff run, a team habit under coach Rudy Schenk. Plenty of young players grew in the spotlight and the 2012 team should be another to watch.

Highland

The 2011 season wasn’t what the Rams were hoping for as they finished near the bottom of Region 6 thanks in great part to struggles scoring. Kate Orchard led the team with six goals and Jade Larsen scored five times. In all, the team only scored 27 goals in Region 6 play and 33 overall.

Park City

The Miners made the most of their playoff trip this season, pushing all the way to the semifinals where they lost to eventual state champion Ogden 2-1 Oct. 21. Park City is still young after putting together impressive back-to-back seasons. Class 3A might have one of its favorites for the 2012 semifinals already in Park City.

Rowland Hall

The Winged Lions advanced to the 2A quarterfinals thanks to a 4-1 win over Gunnison Oct. 12 but came up short in a 4-2 decision to Milliard October 15. Anna Jobe and Katie White each scored in the loss. Rowland Hall employed many players this season and will bring back some youth that could help it continue to grow.
