Judge's Kinney to play men's golf for Mesa State
Davis Kinney, son of Nancy Kinney and Todd Kinney, will attend Mesa Sate College, and will play men's golf for the Mavericks. He plans to major in business or economics. Mesa State competes in NCAA Division II, and are members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mesa State's men's golf team is coached by Paul Brown, now in his first season as head coach.
“I chose Mesa State because it had the right combination of academics, athletics and social environment for me,” said Kinney. “I had a great visit to the school, and with Coach Brown and the current players. I had a really enjoyable high school experience with Mike and Patty Brimley, my coaches at Judge. They were tough on me, but in a good way. They were tough on me so I would get better.”
Founded in 1925, Mesa State College is a comprehensive regional public higher education institution offering liberal arts, professional, and technical programs at the master's, bachelor's, associate, and certificate levels. Mesa State College has an enrollment of over 7,700 students with ten percent of the College's student body coming from outside Colorado. Mesa State’s men’s golf roster currently lists players from Colorado and Oregon. Matches are scheduled in a number of states including Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska and New Mexico.
"Davis has a great enthusiasm for the game of golf and works hard at it,” said Mike Brimley, Judge Memorial boys’ golf head coach. “He is a very dedicated player and will be an asset to the Mesa State Men's golf team.”
Kinney is a graduate of J.E. Cosgriff Memorial School and has done volunteer service with Cosgriff, St. Ambrose Parish, and with Big Brothers Big Sisters. In addition to participating on the Judge golf team, he runs track, has played basketball and baseball and is a member of the National Honor Society. Kinney is an outstanding student, earning both honor roll and Scholar-Athlete status throughout his high school years. He earned first-team All-State in golf following the fall 2010 season.
“My teachers here at Judge are amazing,” said Kinney. “I can relate to them in and out of the classroom, and I know they care and really want me to succeed. There is a sense of unity at Judge that means a lot to me. I have a lot of different friends who do a lot of different things, but we all get along and mesh. We’re really lucky here.”
