February 24, 2008Final Blog Freshmen Girls Basketball, 2008I realize this final post is a little dilatory, but I wanted to wait until all the finals were wrapped up for the season and expound on the big picture. Hey, its my blog and I can do it how I want to.
What a basketball season !! The Freshmen girls wind up with the best season ever. Both the boys and the girls Varsity teams make it to the state finals. The boys take state and the girls miss it after a valiant effort by just 6 points. The Utah Jazz are having a good year. The Utes are looking a little better this year and BYU.....wait a minute, who cares? sorry Cougs and Y-ites, again, its my blog. Anyway, the basketball Gods were cooperative this year, what a season!!
In the Judge Freshmen Invitational Tournament, our boys won in some very exciting games and our girls took 2 of 3 games; losing to Wasatch. It was a bitter pill to lose to a team we had defeated twice, but we had an off game and give the Wasps credit, they had a great game. As everyone has observed, our free throws, 0 for 12 were probably the deciding factor; ie. make 1/2 and you are right in there, make all of them or at least most and we could have won the game.
Final scores, Judge 57 East 20, Judge 26 Wasatch 34, Judge 45 Murray 24. Final record 18 wins, 3 losses. Great Job Team, Coach Lee and Amanda! I am not going into detail on stats as it truly was a team effort all year but, top scorers in game 1, Ellen with 12 (and two 3's), Marrisa with 10, Natasha with 10 (and two 3's), Mary with 9 (and one 3), Damara with 8. Game 2, Natasha with 8. Game 3, Ellen with 12 (and one 3). Again, a tremendous season.
Here's a wish list for this team, the seeds of our future Varsity squad. 1. Increase your free throw percentage and consistency. 2. Make all (or at least most) of your wide open, breakaway lay ups (but I am not picking on you, Ellen Sliwinski). 3. Improve your outside shooting consistency. 4. Keep up your tenacious D (your trademark). 5. Improve your ability to box out and post up. 6. Stay together.....you are a talented, athletic group. We look forward to big things in the future.
See you all at the basketball banquet. Come and celebrate our great year!!! March 9th, 6:30 pm, Cottonwood Country Club. Freshmen Boys and Girls and their families. Cost: $ 25.00 per person. Contact Angie Matinkhah.
Signing off,

February 10, 2008Freshmen Girls Basketball, 2/10/08Hello Bulldog Sports Fans & B-Ballers!
This will be the last blog of the regular 2007/2008 season. The girls finished strong with three victories on 01/28, 02/04 & 02/08 to bring their record to an impressive 16 victories and 2 losses which is an 89% winning percentage.
OK, lets start with a history test. Three important dates; 3000 BC, 476 AD and 2008? The birth of civilization, the fall of the Roman Empire and the best record in Judge's Freshmen Girls history (or so I am told).
On January 28th Judge hosted Highland; final score Judge 42 & Highland 5..another "edge of your seat-nailbiter". Top scorer was Marissa with 9 points, who contemplated a return to the Globetrotters and shooting while seated. Natasha and Kelly each added 7 points. Ellen had 5 points (no you're not in a slump, you don't have to be the top scorer in every game). Gabbie M., Mary and Senia each scored 4 points and Shelby contributed 2 points. Nice game after a sloppy first quarter. A few highlights; "G" made a nice steal, dribbled the length of the court left handed and couldn't believe her good fortune, so she gave the ball back. Kelly learned that if you shoot directly into trees without using your pivot foot, all you find is branches and Gabbie M. liked her dribbling so much she thought she'd try a little double dribbling.
On February 4th, West traveled east to Judge. Final score Judge 58 & West 38. Some really nice passing, assists and team play was exhibited in this game; but a less than stellar fourth quarter. We gave too many easy baskets to West and the ref's decided they were tired of calling fouls and/or forgot their whistles. Marissa was top scorer with 13 points, Natasha had a nice game with 9 points including 2 threes and Mary, who's offense has come to life, also added 9. Gabbie M. scored 7 points, Kelly scored 8 points, Rima and Shelby each added 4 points and Ellen & Erin contributed 2 each. This was a good team win with unselfish team play. There was 4 treys by the half; i.e., 2 by Natasha, one from Navel and one from Marissa.
Final game of the regular season on February 8th. Judge traveled to Park City and defeated the Miners 39 to 15 (actually 41, but the scorekeeper missed a basket). I overheard their coach telling them to "just forget the last game" as I entered the gym. Well, I quess they had good memories because the results were the same. Ellen regained the top scorer spot with a nice game and 10 points. Kelly actually had 8 points (but got credit for 6) and Marissa put in 8. Natasha added 6 points, Erin had 3 points and Damara, Mary & Rima each scored 2. Damara in particular had some nice stuffs.
It was a good final victory to cap off a great season! Good job Freshman girls, James and Amanda!
Now..go WIN that Freshmen Tournament!
Look for the final blog following the tournament.
See you at the tournament!

January 27, 2008Freshmen Girls Basketball January 27, 2008Hello B-ballers and Bulldog Fans!
Judge played Murray at Judge on 01/14. Following a very exciting and intense victory by the freshmen boys, final score 40 to 33; our girls defeated Murray 38 to 27. The game did not begin auspiciously. Murray's "shooter" opened the game with a three and they lead 7 to 0 before Judge scored a point. At the end of the first quarter Murray lead 11 to 8. Murray played tough defense in this one and there weren't many easy baskets in the first half. They still lead at the half 20 to 18, but the Bulldogs came out with their usual strong third quarter and turned the tide. Murray did not score in the third period and Judge surged to a 38 to 27 victory in the end. Ellen scored 10 points, Mary and Damara each put in 6 points, Gabbie M. added 4, Marissa, Yesenia, Rima, Shelby and Kelly each contributed 2 points and Natasha had 1...and somewhere in there I missed one?? Complaining about the officiating is probably getting old, but this one was really smelly..at one point I thought Nastasha's mother would turn to violence but luckily officer DDP (Dan DelPorto) intervened in the nick of time.
On 01/23/08, Judge played at East High School. This was not exactly a nail biter and the final score was Judge 54, East 10. This would have been a good time to discuss politics (even with Margaret) or organize your wallet or something.
Marissa was high scorer with 17 points and a flip, followed by Ellen with 12. Natasha had a good game with 10 points, Gabbie M. and Yesenia each added 4 points, Gabby G., Kelly "the hacker", Navel and Shelby each put in 2.
Our record is now 14 and 2, which is an 88% victory rate.
Next up Highland High at Judge Monday, January 28 at 5:30.

January 13, 2008Freshman Girls Basketball, January 13, 2008Hello Bulldog fans!
The girls started out 2008 strong, winning their first four games in the year to bring their record to 11 wins and 2 losses. They scored a combined total of 174 points to their opponents' 85, doubling their points. Two of the games were a little sloppy and certainly not their best play.
January 3, 2008; Judge 50, West 30 at West High School. Ellen Sliwinski was high scorer with 19 points, Kelly the "hacker" had 9, Gabbie M. had 6, Natasha scored 4, Mary had 4, Marissa (2s's, 1 r) had 4, and Shelby and Damara each scored 2 points.
January 7, 2008; Judge 35, East 11 at Judge. One of the highlights had to be Marissa Fuller doing her impression of the Harlem Globetrotters and dribbling while sitting on the court. Thanks Marissa! We kind of got off to a slow start on this one scoring only 15 points in the first half, but had a big third quarter adding 17 more points and a lackluster 4th adding just 3 more points. East on the other hand averaged under 4 points a quarter so this was enough to pull out the win, but not one for the record books. Ellen had 9 points to lead all scorers, Kelly added 7, Mary put in 4, Marissa scored 4, Gabbie M. had 4, Shelby had 2, Rima put in 2, and Damara scored 1. The Bulldogs did a nice job on the boards rebounding and had many steals and nice teamwork with many assists, especially Mary Neville. The team had too many turnovers though.
On January 8, 2008 Judge headed east to Heber to take on Wasatch. I wasn't at the game, so I don't have many stats but it was probably a good game to miss. Final score Judge 31, Wasatch 24. The Heber area is a great place where I love to go flyfishing, but sometimes I have an off day too.
Last but not least, on January 10, 2008; Judge 58, Highland 20 at Highland High School. When we first walked in, many of the parents looked at each other with concern due to Highland's gargantuan proportions. This quickly proved to be unfounded. Although they had one girl who was in fact 6 ft. 2 in. and several other "vertically advantaged" players, they could not dribble the ball and our players were literally salivating every time they came up the court. One of the Highland parents became upset with the Bulldogs aggressive play, complaining to Darlene that they should back off and asking "What would Jesus do?" I just don't know, I've never seen him suit up. Ellen (big surprise) was high scorer with 18 points, Gabbie M. had 6 points, Mary had 6, Marissa scored 4, Kelly scored 4, Yesenia added 6, Erin put in 2, Damara 2, Natasha 2 and Rima and Shelby had 4 points each. This game was a run away victory and the officiating was...let's say challenging. Margaret Neville should have been whistled for a technical for bringing up politics at a sporting event and stumping for Hillary Clinton, no less....but as I said, the officials missed a few.
Final note, as your Blogger I try to be fair and balanced (like Fox News) and give all the girls the credit they deserve. I certainly try not to miss anyone and base my impressions on their play and what stands out.
Next up, Murray at Judge, Monday January 14th at 7:00. Come early and support the Freshmen Boys at 5:30. It should be a great game. They lost to Murray and are looking to even the score.

December 31, 2007Freshman Girls Basketball, December 31, 2007Seasons Greetings, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
The Bulldogs finished the year with a very respectable record of 7 wins and 2 losses.
On December 18th, Judge traveled to Morgan High School and the results were similar to the first meeting, with the Bulldogs losing by 30 points; 54 to 24. Let's not dwell on it, yet again...Morgan is the benchmark, the team to beat.
On December 19th Judge hosted Wasatch and defeated them, 40 t0 10. Nice turn around, ie. lose by 30 then win by 30. First quarter score, Judge 13, Wasatch 5, second quarter Judge 18, Wasatch 8, third quarter, Judge 30 Wasatch 8 and the final score you already know.
Wasatch even tried, unsuccessfully, to put two shots into the wrong basket. Judge held Wasatch to only 2 points in the entire second half.
Once again, stellar defense and the offense was spread across many players.
On December 29th, Judge traveled south to Juan Diego and gave them a belated Christmas present; a 54 to 4 drubbing. This was the most lopsided victory since the Battle of the Little Big Horn. It looked as though Judge would hold JD scoreless, but they made one bucket and two free throws in virtually the last minute of the game.
Some highlights.....first of all, every single player on the Judge team scored that day. Three players were absent and/or didn't suit up. Ellen was the high scorer with 14 points. Mary Neville finally broke out and displayed the type of game her old fans knew she was capable of, scoring 8 points and actually taking the ball "to the hole".
Marrisa had 10 points including a three pointer, Shelby put in 6 points, Yesenia scored 4, Gabby G scored 4 and Gabby M scored 4, Demara added 2, and last but not least Kelly had 3 points. If I have misspelled any of your names please send a nasty e-mail to Darleen Fuller (two e`s). The rebounding, steals and assists were great in the two victories and we even had a few blocked shots. These are the little things that add up to make a really good team.
Next up, Judge at West, Thursday January 3rd at 5 p.m. We meet three new opponents in the upcoming games; East, West and Highland. Be sure to show up and support the team! We look forward to a great 2008 season!

December 16, 2007Freshmen Girls Basketball-December 16, 2007Hello Bulldog Fans,
Well, it was a great week for the freshmen b-ballers winnning two games and improving their record to 5 wins and 1 loss. More impressive than the wins, was the significant improvement exhibited in those two games by the entire team.
On December 11, Judge defeated Ogden 47 to 11 at Judge. Some highlights...Ellen Sliwinski finally found her offensive rhythm and located the 'sweet spot' on the glass. Not only was she unstoppable on the fast break, she had steals, good defense, assists and great passing making the whole team play better. Kelly Hanlon, the 'hacker' put in so much effort that she fouled out.. but sometimes when you work hard , you get your hands dirty. Great effort! Shelby Carpenter went on a tear and had a monster game, pulling down rebounds and playing tough defense. Damara Walker found her game grabbing some key rebounds and making nice 'put backs'. Natashia Robinson, Yesenia Villegas and Marissa Fuller made some nice shots and the two Gabs put in a couple.
Its hard to compliment specific players because you run the risk of missing something, but these are the things that stood out to me. Suffice to say, it was a great TEAM effort and everyone contributed, particularly with the team defense which was outstanding.
Game 2 was on December 12 at Murray. Final score Judge 42, Murray 27. The first half was close with Judge up by one point 21 to 20. Those two quarters were characterized by some of the worst passing I've seen all season. There were so many sloppy passes and deflections it looked more like a volleyball game. But, the Bulldogs defense was relentless. This was a better team than many we played with some decent ball handlers and good shooters. However, in the second half the conditioning and quickness of Judge paid off. They ran Murray into the ground with the defense never letting up and Murray scoring only 7 points. Ellen was, once again, the burglar deflecting and picking off pass after pass and scoring a bunch. Shelby had another impressive game gobbling up rebounds. The passing and assists really showed improvement. The girls looked energized and played like a team once again, in the second half in particular. Erin Cole started nailing her patented 'leaner' from the wing and Mary Neville (Navel), Marissa, Damara, Kelly and Yesenia all contributed some points. Nice team win! Last, but certainly not least, kudos to coaches, James and Amanda for the nice improvement the team exhibited this week. They made some good adjustments and nice progress. Everyone is anticipating a much better effort and more competitive game up north next week.

December 14, 2007Reunion Benefit Dinner for the Demi Candelaria Scholarship FundWe are so excited to be planning our first girls basketball reunion for December 28 at 6:00 pm in the good 'ole Judge Memorial Cafeteria. Not only will the dinner be a fun time to catch up with old friends, but the proceeds will go to benefit a great cause- The Demi Candelaria Scholarship Fund. This past school year was the first time we were able to honor girls basketball and girls soccer players with the scholarship. The basketball player is our senior, Jenna Sliwinski, and two soccer players received the scholarship- Carrie Curtin and Samantha Gonzalez. We would like to try to have an annual alumni reunion dinner to benefit the scholarship. The price of the dinner is $25 for adults, $15 for children (under 18), and $75 for a family (mother, father, and dependent children). Information about the benefit went out in the first basketball newsletter of the season sent this week. If you did not receive a newsletter and would like to, please email Mary Chris Ledbetter at mledbetter@judgememorial.com with your contact information. We are still looking for donations for a raffle that we will be having at the dinner, so if you have anything you would like to donate, please contact Mary Chris at the email above or at 517-2138. The RSVP response cards are due by Friday, December 21st. REMEMBER: The dinner is for former and current Lady Bulldog Basketball players, their families, past and current parents, AND fans!
