Thanksgiving Food Drive Begins Nov 17

Judge Memorial faculty, staff, and students will host a Thanksgiving Food Drive from Monday, November 17 through Monday, November 24. This food drive will benefit Catholic Community Services’ St. Vincent DePaul Resource Center.

Beginning Monday, November 17, each Judge Memorial CP classroom will hold a collection box and students will be asked to bring in various items depending on their class year and based upon what Catholic Community Services indicates is their greatest need.

  • Seniors: the Class of 2009 will be asked to donate chili & soups.
  • Juniors: the Class of 2010 will be asked to donate pasta.
  • Sophomores: the Class of 2011 will be asked to donate canned fruit.
  • Freshmen: the Class of 2012 will be asked to donate tuna.
  • Faculty & Staff will be asked to donate rice.

CCS shared some fairly grim statistics earlier this month with Amanda Lazinski, of Judge Memorial’s theology department, who will coordinate this project. For the past seven years, the organization had been supporting approximately 40-60 families per month. Beginning in late summer, the number of families needing assistance has averaged over 180 families per month. The need for assistance, just in our local community in the past three months, has nearly tripled.

For over 60 years, Catholic Community Services of Utah has empowered families and individuals of all races and religious backgrounds to realize their full potential by supplying the basic necessities of life – food, clothing, and shelter. CCS’s Resource Center primarily benefits low income families who need more than food stamps to get through the month.
