Essential Knowledge and Skills

Students in Spanish II will develop the competencies delineated in the Standards of Foreign Language Learning as set by the state of Utah and the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City. Students will explore the vocabulary and grammar used to communicate in a school setting, have a conversation with friends, have a conversation about their homes and their rooms, clothing, shopping, prices, transportation and travel, community, entertainment and technology. Students will review the present tense of regular and irregular verbs. They will be introduced to the use of the preterit tenses in order talk about a past event.

Indicators of Student Learning

Upon the completion of the course, students will:

Cultural Knowledge • Gain information about cultural festivals, products, foods, and places around the Spanish speaking world through their texts.

Oral Communication

• Engage in conversation about chapter topics impromptu.

• Present information, concepts and ideas to an audience of listeners on a variety of topics using visual aids such as power point presentations.

• Comprehend the situational scenarios in each chapter and be able to respond to them.

• Understand and interpret the spoken language by using listening skills through the audio and video program companion to the textbook.

• Work in groups, with partners, or individually to create scenes from each chapter in which the students will use the vocabulary to show their mastery of it.

• Share ideas and information in discussions.

Written Communication

• Use parts of speech correctly to write daily paragraphs.

• Synthesize information to answer questions, respond to questions, complete text book activities, and communicate ideas.

• Translate from Spanish to English and English to Spanish

• Students will learn new vocabulary

• Connect prior learning to scaffold better writing skills.

Listening Comprehension

• Use auditory clues such as intonation to infer meaning of words.

• Use contextual clues to infer meaning of words.

• Students will listen to the audio program companion to their text answering correctly comprehension questions about what they heard.

• They will write down answers to questions after hearing a situation take place.

• Students will be able to engage in conversation by interpreting what others are saying.

Reading Skills

• Read Spanish in a way that meaning is communicated and comprehend what was read.

• Gain comprehensible input through practice activities, culture notes, and text reading selections.

Technological and media Skills

• Students will learn to access the Publisher Website for extra resources

• Students will use Power Point to aid during oral presentations.

• Students will be exposed to media in the target language in the form of cultural and other videos and their comprehension packets.

Assessment

Upon the successful completion of the course, students will:

• Give oral presentations of art and culture using Power Point as a visual aid.

• Translate from Spanish to English and English to Spanish

• Interpret and engage in conversations in group, partner and classroom settings.

• Understand and interpret spoken language to engage in impromptu conversations

• Learn and master new vocabulary

• Improve writing skills

• In Spanish, write daily paragraphs, letters, advertisements, skits, and stories using correct parts of speech.

• Write answers to questions after hearing a situation take place.
