World Languages Department

Essential knowledge and Skills:

Students in French IV Honors study the French language with a strong emphasis on fluency, both orally and in writing. The class is conducted in French. Students are encouraged to understand French “from the inside” without relying on English and to think in French. TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) is used to encourage more active assimilation of concepts.

Indicators of Student learning

Upon completion of this course, students will:

• Feel comfortable writing short essays

• Be comfortable communicating in French with a native speaker

• Be able to function with success in a French speaking environment

• Be able to understand the main gist of French newspaper articles, short stories, or movies

• Be familiar with France’s history

• Know a good selection of French poems and songs, as well as about their authors

Communication

• Express themselves in target language without having to constantly refer to English

• Speak about a wide variety of topics in target language

• Sing a song or recite a poem in target language

• Start making references to French sayings in conversation

Technology

• Continue to use the Internet and French search engines

• Research any topic in target language on Internet

• Research travel destination and information about stays in French speaking countries

• Use power point presentation to introduce research to classmates

Assessment

Upon completion of this course, students will:

• Have participated in the National French Contest

• Have evaluated their own performance by comparison to their performance on the previous year’s contest.

• Have evaluated their own performance by comparison to the performance of students in the state of Utah, as well as nationally.

• Feel confident in a French-speaking environment

• Communicate with a native speaker and classmate in target language.

• Exchange emails with French speaking correspondent.
