Essential Knowledge and Skills
French I introduces students to the French language by developing basic skills of elementary reading, writing, and oral communication. The course is also intended to expose the students to the culture of the French-speaking world.
Indicators of Student Learning
Upon the completion of this course, students will:
• Be able to introduce themselves, by providing information about their name, age, address, and school.
• Be able to describe and comprehend basic events in the present and the near future
• Express and comprehend basic needs, desires, and opinions in the present and near future tense.
• Ask basic survival questions
• Have developed an overview of the French-speaking world, with an emphasis on France
• Recognize the use of the French language in their everyday experiences: shopping, on labels and advertisements.
• Participated in cultural and traditional experiences mainly during holidays
• Be able to pray in French
Communication
• Engage in short dialogs with classmates or a native speaker on various aspects of their lives
• Give simple commands such as giving directions or proposing leisure activities to friends
• Hold a simple telephone conversation with a friend or native speaker
Technology
• Present a region of France to the class using a Power Point presentation
• Use French websites to find information about sights or people introduced in class or in their textbooks
• Watch movies in French language with English subtitles
• Listen to French music and learn to appreciate it
Assessment
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
• Participate in the National French Contest
• Evaluate their own performance by comparing it to their performance on the previous year’s contest.
• Evaluate their own performance by comparing it to the performance of students in the state of Utah, as well as nationally.
• Feel confident in a French-speaking environment
• Communicate with a native speaker
