Physical Education Department

Essential Knowledge and Skills:

Health students study the components of a healthy lifestyle, which include physical, mental, and social wellbeing. Students will be introduced to the skills that are necessary to incorporate these concepts into their decision- making processes. This course will cover the areas of health and wellness, health and your body, drugs, and diseases and disorders, as well as nutrition and healthy relationships. The successful completion of this course is required for high school graduation according to the graduation requirements of the Utah State Education Code.

Indicators of Student Learning

Upon Completion of this course, students will:

• Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and strategies related to mental and emotional health to enhance self-concept and relationships with others.

• Use nutrition and fitness information, skills, and strategies to enhance health.

• Demonstrate health-promoting and risk-reducing behaviors to prevent substance abuse.

• Demonstrate the ability to apply prevention and intervention knowledge, skills, and processes to promote safety in the home, school, and community.

• Understand and summarize concepts related to health promotion and the prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases.

• Demonstrate knowledge of human development, social skills, and strategies that encourage healthy relationships and healthy growth throughout life.

Assessment

Upon the completion of this course, students will:

• Participate in group discussions and reading.

• Demonstrate competency in self awareness through several homework assignments.

• Demonstrate knowledge in all sub categories through written tests.

• Demonstrate competency in technology and subject matter by creating a power point presentation for the class.
