Essential Knowledge and Skills

Students in yoga explore working the body through postures (asanas), breathing and relaxation. Yoga can be viewed as artistic movement, fitness graining, sport therapy, and lifestyle enrichment and stress reduction.

Indicators of Student Learning

Upon the completion of this Course, student will:

Physical

• Build strength of muscles and bones.

• Lengthen muscles to increase mobility in the joints.

• Develop understanding of body mechanics, healthy movement patterns, and ideal postural alignment.

• Develop the skill of non-action and the awareness to physically relax. • Breath Awareness.

• Provide physical experiences that ask the body to continually re-establish balance, which develops coordination and prevents injury.

• Revitalize low energy and temper hyperactivity

Mental

• Experience a sense of space around their concerns and provides techniques for redirecting thoughts and calming the nervous system.

• Develop good decision making.

• Develop the ability to focus through practical disciplines of breath and body work.

• Develop a Healthy body image.

• Cultivate gratitude for what the body can do; letting go of the tendency to be critical of one’s self and judgmental of others

Spiritual

• Cultivate qualities of kindness, compassion and nonviolence.

• Cultivate interconnectedness to others and the natural world around us.

• Heighten awareness

• Self--trust by valuing one’s internal voice.

Communication

• Create discussions based on yoga principles.

• End of the semester project based on benefits experienced in class.

• Non –verbal communication through daily practice.

Assessment

Upon the completion of this Course, student will:

• Participate in daily practice and complete weekly quizzes.

• Demonstrate the proper class room behavior and procedure

• Focus on Attitude and effort

• Semester independent project
