3401 Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry

Mathematics Department

Essential Knowledge and Skills

Students in Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry will study the topics of Algebra including quadratic and linear equations, solving systems of equations using different methods, the study of conics, as well as a thorough study of trigonometry. This course is intended for the student who is motivated to continue their education at the college level and who desire a solid foundation in high school mathematics. Prerequisite Algebra II

Indicators of Student Learning

Upon the completion of this course, students will:

Problem Solve:

• Write and solve equations from word sentences using geometry, formulas, trigonometry and real world data.

• Solve systems of linear and quadratic equations both algebraically as well as graphically.

• Perform correct algebraic operations on polynomials, rational expressions, and complex numbers.

• Write, graph and manipulate equations of lines, logarithms, exponentials, polynomials and trigonometric functions.

Reason and Understand the Properties of Algebra

• Recognize the inter relationships of algebra, and trigonometry.

• Recognize the components of graphs and the correlation to algebraic equations.

• Graph equations, systems and data. Then analyze the data, estimate outcome and determine if the results are reasonable.

Communication

• Link the language of mathematics to everyday life.

• Communicate mathematically using accurate and appropriate mathematical notation and terminology.

Technology

• Use a graphing calculator efficiently and accurately for computation, graphing, and modeling a wide variety of mathematical concepts.

• Select and use appropriate technology to solve problems.

• Collaborate with peers to use technology to compile and produce projects, models, and other creative works.

Assessments

Upon completion of this course students will:

• Demonstrate competency in problem solving including; choosing appropriate operations, calculating results and checking for the reasonableness of those results.

• Demonstrate competence in manipulation and deciphering of equations.

• Demonstrate competency in communication by using correct terminology, expressing ideas clearly, explaining analytical process, presenting ideas and information in visual presentations, written response and multi-media presentations.
