Essential Knowledge and Skills
This course provides opportunities for students to work with a variety of aspects in journalism, photography, and graphic art design to create the year-end production of the Judge Memorial Catholic High School Yearbook, Basilean.
Indicators of Student Learning
Upon the completion of this course, students will:
• Create design layouts for pages to be used in the yearbook.
• Create headlines, copy and captions that are relevant to a specified topic.
• Have a well- developed understanding of vocabulary specific to yearbook creation, including vocabulary used in journalism and graphic art design.
• Show their ability to use basic interviewing skills.
• Share knowledge of the importance of photography opportunities and the need for a variety of photographs taken.
• Show basic skills in taking photos.
• Understand the basic functions of photo editing techniques.
• Be able to fluidly use the program,“Yearbook Avenue”, provided as the main yearbook creation tool by Jostens.
• Meet essential deadlines.
• Meet the need for fair and equal coverage of the student body.
• Show an understanding for the importance of teamwork in developing this media.
Assessment
The following assessments will determine successful completion of this course:
• Visual layout evaluations
• Content evaluations of layouts
• Daily use of Yearbook Avenue
• Completion of deadlines on time
• Reach the goal of every student in the book three times
• Final publication of the annual Basilean
