1711/1712 Compelling Non-fiction

Essential Knowledge and Skills:
Students in Compelling Non-Fiction study a variety of non-fiction texts on contemporary issues and topics. Students will read, view, listen to, and create non-fiction texts. Students will also study how non-fiction texts are structured.
Indicators of Student Learning
Upon the completion of the course students will:
• Critically read multiple non-fiction texts (book, essay, newspaper, etc.).
• Critically listen to various non-fiction texts (radio programs, etc.).
• Critically view multiple non-fiction texts (television, documentary film, etc.).
• Use various close-reading techniques as they study non-fiction texts (note taking, annotating, etc.).
• Understand various techniques creators of non-fiction texts use to persuade the audience.
• Articulate ethical obligations of creators of non-fiction.
• Engage in discussions about both the genre and the contemporary issues portrayed in the texts used.
• Use sources outside their own experience to support or explain a position on a contemporary issue.
• Write and create their own non-fiction texts (audio, visual, and written).
• Understand the impact technology has on the creation and viewing of non-fiction texts.
Assessments of Student Learning
• Assessments may include, but are not limited to , discussion, notes, quizzes, written work and projects.
