Essential Knowledge and Skills

This course emphasizes good technique in various jazz styles such as Latin, Swing, Funk, and Rock, including articulation, rhythms, and tone quality; discovering literature, reading and listening skills, elementary jazz theory, improvisation skills and performance etiquette.

Indicators of Student Learning

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

• Develop good improvisation skills

• Play with a good groove.

• Play with rhythmic accuracy and articulation.

• Have a better knowledge of jazz music and legendary jazz musicians

• Will have developed good listening skills and be able to transcribe solos.

Assessment

The following assessments will determine successful completion of this course:

• Performance in at least 2 major concerts

• Passing grades for playing exams

• Show proficiency playing an improvisational solo

• Concert attendance reports, listening and practice logs
