Essential Knowledge and Skills Students in Dance I build dance knowledge and skills in technique, improvisation, choreography, and artistic expression. Improvisation will be used.
Indicators of Student Learning: Upon the completion of this course, students will:
Technical proficiency and Knowledge of the Body •Identify basic physical needs to maintain a healthy, safe body for dance; i.e., warming up the body, proper nutrition, adequate hydration, sleep, conditioning, injury prevention.
•Develop knowledge of the body through fundamental conditioning; i.e., strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, and agility.
•Perform basic axial sequences demonstrating dynamic alignment and dynamic; articulation of the spine, integration of the spine with the periphery, articulation of peripheral body parts promoting mobility, and stability and use of breath to integrate movement patterns.
•Perform basic locomotors steps and locomotor combinations.
•Identify performing techniques in another dancer
Elements of Dance • Create symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes.
• Identify and perform various primary accents for metric phrases.
• Investigate positive and negative space.
• Improvise on established pathways.
• Develop knowledge and skills in energy and motion
Creative / Choreographic • Improvise within a structure.
• Collaborate with peers to create a dance video.
• Create and give multi-media presentations; i.e. Styles of Dance Project
Assessment Upon the completion of this course, students will: • Demonstrate knowledge of the body through fundamental conditioning, i.e., strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination and agility.
• Demonstrate how a dance communicates meaning.
• Identify the various dance purposes served by dance throughout time and in world cultures.
• Demonstrate basic concepts of performing techniques.
• Demonstrate contrasting levels.
• Demonstrate choreographic principles, process, and structures.
• Demonstrate understanding of dance etiquette through appropriate rehearsal and class behavior.
• Demonstrate technique proficiency through skills tests and skill combinations.
• Demonstrate competency in technology by creating and dance video and other multi media presentations.
