Essential Knowledge and Skills

Beginning Ceramics students will be introduced to the basic concepts of clay forming methods, glazing and firing techniques. Students will be introduced to hand building, wheel throwing, combination pieces and glazing techniques. Students will have demonstrations to aid in their exploration of the class. Students will be expected to create and finish ceramic pieces that adhere to the aesthetics of clay.

Indicators of Student Learning

• Students will demonstrate multiple techniques involving clay in a confident manner.

• Students will produce finished work according to the assignments.

• Students will develop a language of ceramics and will be able to communicate this to others.

• Students will have an effective portfolio that demonstrates their skill at the end of the course.

Technology • Film, Internet, course related magazines and books.

Assessment Upon the successful completion of this course students will demonstrate:

• Effective communication about their work with others.

• Finished work that indicates positive learning involving clay.

• Personal positive attitude about their abilities demonstrating their success.
