Essential Knowledge and Skills
This course studies the elements of music notation, aural recognition, and sight singing. It develops the musical ear and eye, and teaches the principles of voice leading.
Indicators of Student Learning
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will:
• Know the fundamental elements of music theory.
• Achieve notation skills.
• Be familiar with score analysis.
• Be fluent in melodic organization and harmonic progressions.
• Know rhythmic/meter organization.
• Achieve aural skills.
• Achieve sight singing skills.
Assessment
The following assignments are required for successful completion of the course:
• Acceptable rating on the Advanced Placement Exam
• Writing projects
• Sight singing and notation exams
• Simple score analysis
